Section 1: The Flight to Abyssinia

  • Content: Describe the persecution faced by the early Muslims in Mecca in 615 AD. Explain that Prophet Muhammad instructed his followers to seek refuge in the Christian Kingdom of Aksum, known for its just ruler .
  • Key Detail: Mention that among the refugees were close relatives of the Prophet .

Section 2: The Righteous King – Al-Najashi (Negus)

  • Content: Introduce King Armah (Ashama ibn Abjar), known by the title Negus or Al-Najashi. Tell the dramatic story of the Quraish emissaries who followed the refugees, demanding their return and offering bribes. Detail the king’s famous refusal, stating he would not give up the people who sought his protection “even for a mountain of gold” .
  • Highlight: Emphasize that this act of interfaith justice created a powerful, enduring bond. The Prophet is said to have prayed for the king upon his death .

Section 3: The Settlement at Negash

  • Content: Explain that the king settled the refugees in the area of Negash, where they could live in peace. This became the first Muslim community in Africa.
  • Key Detail: The name “Negash” itself is derived from the local word for king .

Section 4: The Sacred Site Today

  • Content: Describe the Al-Nejashi Mosque complex.
    • Africa’s First Mosque: Believed to be the oldest mosque on the continent, established after 615 CE .
    • The Tombs of the Sahaba: The site contains the tombs of 15 companions (Sahaba) of the Prophet Muhammad, making it a uniquely sacred pilgrimage site .
    • “The Second Mecca”: Because of this, Ethiopian Muslims revere Al-Nejashi as the “Second Mecca,” the second holiest place for them after the Kaaba itself .

Section 5: A Story of Coexistence
