Headline: Carrying Forward a 1,400-Year Legacy of Refuge

Introductory Text:
In 615 AD, a Christian king in the highlands of Tigray opened his land to a small group of persecuted refugees from Arabia. That act of compassion created Al-Nejashi—Africa’s first Muslim settlement, a sanctuary that would be revered for centuries as the “Second Mecca.”

Today, the Al-Nejashi Foundation exists to honor that legacy. We serve the community that once served as a refuge for the world, transforming a sacred history into living, breathing support for the people of Negash.

Who We Are

The Al-Nejashi Foundation is a community-focused humanitarian organization dedicated to supporting the historic Negash region in Tigray, northern Ethiopia. We are a team of educators, community leaders, and heritage advocates united by a single belief: the place that once protected the first Muslims in Africa deserves protection, empowerment, and opportunity in return.

We work directly with local communities, health centers, and educational institutions to provide sustainable support that honors the past while building for the future.

Our Story: How the Foundation Began

The idea for the Al-Nejashi Foundation was born from a simple observation and a profound question.

For years, visitors—pilgrims, historians, and tourists—have traveled to Negash to witness the tombs of the Sahaba and pray at Africa’s first mosque. They come inspired by the story of King Al-Najashi’s justice and the refuge he provided. But as they leave, many began to notice a disconnect.

The community that guards this sacred site, that has preserved these tombs for over fourteen centuries, faces immense challenges. Limited access to healthcare, economic opportunity, and educational resources stands in stark contrast to the global significance of the ground they walk on.

The question became: How can we, who benefit from this legacy of refuge, become a refuge for this community in their time of need?

In [Year of Foundation], the Al-Nejashi Foundation was established to answer that question. We began by partnering with local initiatives—supporting the orphanage that cares for vulnerable children, providing resources to the health center fighting malnutrition, and creating vocational programs that turn skills into sustainable livelihoods.

We are not outsiders bringing solutions. We are partners, walking alongside the community of Negash to ensure that the place which once welcomed the world is never forgotten or forsaken.

Our Guiding Principles

1. Rooted in History

Everything we do is inspired by the story of Al-Nejashi. The justice of King Armah, the faith of the Sahaba, and the welcome of the Aksumite people are not just stories we tell—they are the model for how we serve. We approach our work with the same compassion, fairness, and openness that defined that first act of refuge.

2. Committed to Sustainability

We do not believe in handouts that create dependency. Every program we develop—from vocational training to healthcare support—is designed to build self-sufficiency. We teach skills, not just provide aid. We empower people to build their own futures.

3. Honoring All Faiths

Al-Nejashi is a sacred site for Muslims, made possible by the righteousness of a Christian king. This interfaith harmony is central to our identity. We serve everyone in the Negash community, regardless of faith or background, just as King Al-Najashi welcomed people of all beliefs to his kingdom.

4. Transparency and Trust

We are accountable to our donors, our partners, and most importantly, to the community we serve. We operate with integrity, ensuring that every contribution reaches the people and programs that need it most.
